Pulse Field Ablation: A New Option for Treating Atrial Fibrillation at Our Practice
For several months, High Desert Heart & Vascular has been offering a cutting-edge procedure called Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib). AFib is a common heart condition that causes an irregular or fast heartbeat, increasing the risk of stroke and other serious complications. PFA is an exciting new treatment that offers patients better outcomes with fewer risks and a faster recovery time.
What Is Pulse Field Ablation?
Pulse Field Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that helps correct the electrical signals in the heart that cause AFib. Instead of using heat (radiofrequency) or cold (cryoablation) to create scar tissue, PFA uses controlled electrical pulses to target problem areas in the heart. These tiny scars block abnormal electrical signals, helping the heart beat more regularly.
How Does PFA Work?
The procedure is performed through a catheter: a thin, flexible tube inserted into a blood vessel, usually in the groin, and guided to the heart. Once in place, the catheter delivers quick bursts of electrical energy to specific areas of the heart. This process is highly targeted, reducing the risk of damage to nearby tissues like the esophagus or nerves.
Why Is PFA Beneficial?
There are several key advantages to PFA:
💜 Precision and Safety: PFA focuses on the heart tissue causing AFib while sparing surrounding tissues. This reduces the chance of complications compared to traditional ablation methods.
💜 Faster Recovery: Most patients recover more quickly after PFA. Many can return to normal activities within a few days.
💜 Reduced Procedure Time: PFA is often faster to perform than other types of ablation.
💜 Effective Treatment: PFA is showing promising results in controlling AFib and reducing symptoms, helping patients feel better and live healthier lives.
What to Expect During and After the Procedure
PFA is typically done under light sedation or general anesthesia, and the entire procedure takes just a few hours. Afterward, patients may stay at Treasure Valley Hospital overnight for monitoring. Follow-up visits will ensure your heart is responding well to the treatment.
Our Experience with Pulse Field Ablation
Our lead EP technician, Andy Prater, had this to say when asked about his experience with PFA, “It is revolutionizing the EP lab, offering a safer, more efficient approach to treating atrial fibrillation. I’ve seen firsthand how PFA enhances both patient safety and procedural efficiency—bringing us closer to more consistent, predictable outcomes in AF treatment.”
Over the past few months, we have seen positive outcomes in patients who have undergone PFA. Many have reported improvements in their symptoms and overall quality of life. We are proud to offer this advanced treatment option to help our patients manage AFib with fewer risks and quicker recoveries.
