Q&A

Where are you from?
I grew up on a ranch in rural Montana. This upbringing has had a monumental impact on my approach to life both personally and professionally.

What made you become a cardiologist?
My mom was a public health nurse and my best friend’s dad was our local town doctor. These influences lead me to medical school and training at the University of North Carolina. During my residency at UNC, I was fortunate enough to work with several amazing cardiologists who inspired me to go into cardiology. This included Dr Rick Stouffer at the University of North Carolina, Dr. Venu Menon currently at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr Mauricio Cohen at the Cleveland Clinic Florida, and Dr Eric Yang at the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale.

What is your approach to medicine and working with your patients?
I want to help people make the best decisions about their health through support and education. I view my role in helping patients as being there to support their decisions rather than dictating their options. Ultimately, people succeed when they find a way to make a choice that is best for them.

How long have you lived in Boise? What do you love about living and working here?
We have lived here for 15 years and love many things about the Boise community including the people, the arts programs, the schools and sports and of course the amazing access to the outdoors.

Tell us about your family!
I’ve been married to my wife for over 20 years. We have two kids—one is in junior high and the other in high school.

What are your hobbies and interests? What might we find you doing on the weekends?
I love to be active outdoors. In the summer I bike, hike and fish. During the winter I ski with my family.
